Pocatello has been a crossroads for as long as it has existed. It grew up as a rail town in the gap where the Portneuf River cuts through, and it still works as a distribution and transportation hub for southeast Idaho, the place freight passes through on its way somewhere else. Bannock County business, Idaho State University, and the surrounding region all pull goods in through that junction.
